As we as a nation celebrate Juneteenth Day we should stop and remember those who made it possible. I am not talking about the Congress and President Biden who sighed the bill. I am talking about the hundreds of thousands who died to end slavery. As John Brown predicted “the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood”. That blood debt was paid by the overwhelmingly white Union Forces. Many would argue that the Civil War was fought to preserve the Union, but it is also true that there was always a strong moral element to the struggle. As the war progressed this element became stronger and stronger. And let us not forget that the war began precisely to protect and preserve slavery, so the war was always about slavery. As part of every coming Juneteenth celebration we should take time to remember the many many who were martyred to make it possible.
